Jordi, could you have imagined a better return to the Ekstraklasa—a Wisła victory and your goal in front of more than 31,000 fans?

Jordi Sánchez: Yes, perhaps only if the referee had awarded my second goal and we had won by a larger margin. Of course, I’m joking. It was unforgettable and incredible. As always, the fans supported us with tremendous passion. We know they will be our strength in home matches, and we must know how to make the most of it.

Tell us about the goal. Did you expect such a cross from Raoul Giger, and did you immediately know where you wanted to direct the ball?

Jordi Sánchez: That is the secret of our group. We know each other very well, we have no communication problems, and we do not complain about one another. We simply talk about what we expect from each other in order to make a difference on the pitch. That is exactly what happened with this cross and goal.

A few minutes later, you found the net again, but the goal was disallowed following a VAR review. How did you experience those moments, and did you know what was being reviewed?

Jordi Sánchez: To be honest—no. They wanted to find something, and eventually they did. Where and when? I still don’t know. It is quite a common situation for me. In my last two seasons in the Ekstraklasa, three or four of my goals were disallowed in a similar way. That is modern football, though. We have to accept it, keep working, and score even more goals.

The first half was fairly even, but after the break Wisła clearly increased the tempo. What did you change during halftime?

Jordi Sánchez: As I said earlier, we communicate very well with one another, and it was the same during the break. The coach and members of the staff gave us a few pointers, and we discussed the details we needed to improve. We also started more nervously than usual because a major event awaited us. We were playing against a strong opponent that competes in European competitions. It was also Wisła’s first match in the PKO BP Ekstraklasa after a long wait—for the Club, the fans, and the players alike.

GKS scored late on, and the final minutes became tense. What does this victory say about the team’s character, and what did the first match after returning to the PKO BP Ekstraklasa teach you?

Jordi Sánchez: There is always something to improve, but we have to be satisfied because now “only” three points matter each week, and we earned our first full haul. We performed at a high level against a team that, after a very good previous season, competes in European competitions. We must appreciate what we have done, gain confidence from it, and believe even more strongly in this team.
