History of league statistics
The statistics for top league goal scorers were first introduced by the Warsaw weekly "Stadjon". S. Mielech played a significant role in this, regularly developing the football section of the magazine. The compilations began to be published at the start of the league season. However, after a few years, "Stadjon" abandoned this form of statistics, and other sports titles were reluctant to continue this tradition.
For example, "Przegląd Sportowy" only occasionally published goalscorer statistics – usually at the end of the season and not always consistently.
After World War II, statistics of top scorers began to appear regularly in the press, albeit for a short time. They were abandoned during the Stalinist period, only to return to this practice after the political thaw in the second half of the 1950s. Since then, compilations of the best league sharpshooters have become a permanent feature in newspapers – not just sports ones. The title of top scorer became a prestigious and valued distinction.
Wisła Kraków players are among the most frequently awarded in the history of these statistics. By 2018, they had collectively won 20 top scorer titles, significantly outperforming players from other clubs. The first top scorer of the Polish league was Wisła's own Henryk Reyman, who set a record still unbroken today – 37 goals scored in a single season.
This testifies to the high effectiveness and class of forwards playing with the white star on their chest, as well as to Wisła's offensive style of play, which has always been particularly valued in Kraków. In essence, every generation of Wisła players could boast an outstanding sharpshooter. Importantly, many top scorer titles were also won in seasons where Wisła was not among the main favorites for the competition or ranked lower in the table. As a rule, these were also Polish national team players.
