Coach Mariusz Jop's comments before the blockbuster match against Legia Warsaw, in which he addressed the issue of the absence of away fans at the stadium on Łazienkowska and the team's preparations for the upcoming match.

The absence of Wisła Kraków fans and the regulations

Asked about the controversy surrounding the absence of Wisła Kraków supporters from the away match, the coach replied:

“For me personally, the worst thing about this whole situation is that clubs are looking for solutions, wondering which lawyer is more clever and where to find a loophole in the whole system in order to ultimately achieve what they want, namely not to let Wisła fans into the stadium. And I think they are forgetting the foundation of why we all do this and who we do it for. We do it so that both teams can be supported by their fans and so that those fans have free access to the stadium, as provided for by the regulations, meaning that 5% of the stadium should be designated for away fans. Looking for legal loopholes is, I think, not the direction we should be taking as a football community,” the coach stressed.

Referring to whether such actions could be called unfair play, the coach added:

“For me, it is something that nevertheless affects a certain symmetry in what should be done so that this match can be accessible to all fans, of course in the appropriate proportions.”

Differences between playing at home and away

Commenting on the statistics and the White Star's poorer points tally in away matches compared with home games, the coach explained:

“As far as the metrics we check are concerned, there are no major differences between home and away matches. The difference lies in the effectiveness of our actions, and that is something that differs from what happens at our own stadium. I think we have already got through that initial period, I mean adapting to and learning what happens in the PKO BP Ekstraklasa at home and away. I think that as a team we are ready to transfer this style of play and effectiveness in our actions to away matches as well. I think tomorrow's match will be a good test for us and another challenge, because the opponent is certainly top-class, an opponent that is consistent, and for us it will definitely be a good opportunity to test ourselves and show what we are capable of.”

The international break and the team's form

Asked whether the long break for international matches had introduced uncertainty into the team, the coach replied:

“I don't think there is any uncertainty, because this is not the beginning of the season. We played friendly matches, and we see these players regularly in training, how they work and how they look, so I have no doubts here. I am rather calm that our performance in this match will be at a good level.”

Referring to goalkeeper Marcel Łubik's situation after the U21 national team camp and the heavy defeat, the coach stressed:

“I don't think there is any problem in Marcel's case. I think that if it hadn't been for him, the result could have been significantly higher. Besides, Marcel is a player who is mentally strong in this respect. And I think the whole story with the youth national team is very positive, because in the end they qualified directly for the European Championship, and I think it would have been very unfortunate if, after winning nine of ten matches, this team had had to play in the playoffs. So it is very good that it ultimately worked out this way, because I think the whole group deserved simply to play in the European Championship.”

Squad situation and players' health

Regarding the players' fitness ahead of the match at Łazienkowska, the coach stated:

“We have had certain problems with some players' health for quite a long time, and this situation is also changing. Some are getting closer to training, others are already training, while others have some minor micro-injuries. The situation is not ideal, but I think we will manage with the squad we have.”

Analysis of Legia Warsaw's play and the expected course of the match

Characterizing the style of the upcoming opponent and the potential scenario on the pitch, the coach noted:

“It is certainly a team known for coach Marek Papszun's style of play. They are consistent and disciplined, especially in defensive actions, and dangerous in transition phases and set pieces. These are the kinds of things that are coach Papszun's trademark, and you can see his very good work in the way this team functions. They certainly have their problems as well. I won't talk about them now; we will want to exploit and expose them in tomorrow's match.”

Answering a question about what the game might look like, the coach added:

“Both scenarios are possible. I am leaning toward the possibility that they will retreat a little and try to play in transition. But we will see; we are ready for anything. Sometimes small situations determine which way the match will go, how it will unfold, and in which phases there will be more of one thing or another. However, I am leaning toward Legia giving us a little more space and trying to play by taking advantage of transition phases.”

Set pieces and the threat from the opponent

Referring to preparations for Legia's set pieces, the coach stressed:

“Legia is certainly a team that looks for crosses from different areas and seeks to play directly whenever possible. Of course, it also depends on the structure they choose, because there were moments when they played in a 5-3-2 formation and also in a 5-4-1 formation. It depends on whether Zjawiński plays, or perhaps Adamski and Zjawiński together, because Kuchta is a striker with a somewhat different profile. So it matters which lineup the coach chooses. However, both Adamski and Zjawiński are players we know well from the first division, and we know that they are strikers who are comfortable in aerial duels, which is probably also one of Legia's attacking options.”
